Following Australia’s resounding series victory over New Zealand, Matthew Wade is aching for the Twenty20 World Cup

After Australia’s rout in New Zealand, stand-in captain Matthew Wade has praised the quality of the T20 team and predicted that selecting a World Cup group will be difficult.

After regular pacemen Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were rested and starter David Warner was ruled out due to injury, Australia won the rain-affected match at Eden Park on Sunday, completing a perfect sweep of the three-match series.

Versatile all-rounder Matt Short, who replaced the absentees, was awarded player of the match after hitting 27 off only 11 balls and claiming a wicket with his off-spin.

Quicks for backup In a contest that was cut down to 10 overs using the Duckworth-Lewis system, Nathan Ellis and Spencer Johnson both performed well in their two-over stints to thwart New Zealand’s push for 126.

Wade said to reporters, referring to chief selector George Bailey, “I don’t envy George’s position, but it’s going to be tight for those last few spots.”

“A few unfortunate guys will be among the 15, so I wouldn’t want to be selecting them.

“We’re glad we have so much depth, but as I mentioned, there are always injuries around, so guys outside the 15 may get opportunities as well.”

The T20 World Cup will take place in the Caribbean and the United States in June, and although players in the Indian Premier League, which begins on March 22, will be taken into consideration by selectors, the series marked Australia’s last opportunity to compete internationally.

Australia, the current world champions in both one-day cricket and test cricket, will attempt to win the T20 competition and become the first country to hold all three global trophies. The defending T20 champions are England.

Although Steve Smith intends to play in the World Cup, his chances of succeeding as a T20 opener are still unknown.

On Sunday, he was caught for four after scoring eleven in the Auckland fixture the previous week.

Other players, like Warner, Travis Head, and captain Mitchell Marsh, have better claims at the top of the order, while Smith was passed over at the IPL auctions late last year.

Wade said, “Obviously Smithy hasn’t played a lot of T20 cricket for Australia in the last little while.”

“Hopefully he succeeds, but someone will always be unfortunate.”

There is fierce competition for slots in the middle order between all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis, and hard-hitting batsman Tim David.

“I can’t wait to get started at the World Cup, to be honest. It’s an exciting time to be in the T20 squad,” Wade said.
